Adelaide’s creative mum, Kellie from @ahomesdiary, shares her bold and playful interior decorating with fellow Aussie homeowners.

For Kellie’s top tips and guidance on how to paint the town red… by town we mean your home, and by red we mean as many colours that fuel your soul, then check out our exclusive interview with this incredibly creative Adelaide mum below…

First off, tell us about your building experience in 2019 and what the main goals or objectives were when designing your build?

We had a great experience building through Dechellis Homes. This was our second build so I think we definitely went into it with more experience.

We learned what worked and what didn’t. We had a better understanding of what is important to upgrade on and what we could stick to the basics with.

Our main goal was to create a space that we loved. We wanted to wake up every morning and feel at home.

there are many home accounts on Instagram nowadays, yet @ahomesdiary stands out to us in particular due to your unique style. We admire your daring use of colour around your home!

Has this always been your style or is it something you had to build up the courage to explore?

Thank you so much. I do think my style has definitely evolved over time but I have always loved using colour. I’m becoming more confident to experiment with colours but I do tend to use colour on items like cushions, vases or throw rugs. That way I can change it up easily.

When building your home did you have your current interior design style in mind, or did this develop once your home was built?

We have spent the last few years working on getting the necessities for our home. Now they are done, we can work on the furnishing and styling, which I cannot wait for!

I have always had a style in mind for our home. I think that is important especially when building to have a style in mind and a vision for the home you want to create.

Having now lived in your newly built home for a couple of years, are there any aspects of your house that you feel you may have overlooked during the building process?

If so what are they and what would be your advice to others who are building their home?

There are always a few things when building that can be overlooked, this time around though there hasn’t been as many, but some things I would of loved to change in our home are:

Storage - I would change our linen cupboard, it is small and pokey and something I overlooked. The more storage the better, you can never have enough I think!

Laundry - I would look at the design, maybe create a larger bench and have more width within the room.

Push cupboards - I did them in the bathroom and laundry and they drive me insane. They are forever opening with the slightest touch.

I would recommend always going over the finer details in your plans and think about the placement of your furniture. This will give you an idea of what you are going to need.

As you have shared on your account you have a young son, Max, and have just had your second child, Poppy – congratulations! What is it like behind the scenes of having two young children and living in a newly built home that is perfectly styled?

Thank you so much. Let's just say as much as I try, it doesn’t always look like my instagram photos haha!

I love my home being organised and everything having its place but it doesn’t always stay like that. I’m unsure why we have a toy room because the toys end up in every room of the house!

Share with us your favourite space in your home and tell us a bit about the creation process.

My favourite space would be Poppy’s room. It is so peaceful and warm.

We had kept our furniture from when Max was born and it worked really well with the style I was going for.

I fell in love instantly with this wallpaper. It is such a bold design so I started with this and drew inspiration from it. I pulled elements out of the wallpaper to tie them together and balance the room.

Do you have any home projects on the agenda for the new year?

This year we will be focusing on our living room, and working on furnishing and styling it. We have just purchased our new couch which should be here in March, we can’t wait to see it in this space.

I also have a few DIY projects I would love to get my hands on and will definitely be sharing them on my page when I make a start on them through the year.

What are the biggest home styling or building tips you have learnt during this journey which you feel are important to share with others building or redecorating their home?

Building - I recommend doing your research, find the right builder for you. You will be working closely throughout your build so it’s important to have that connection from the start and feel comfortable.

Create a moodboard on Pinterest and find inspiration. This will help you create your vision, especially when heading into selections.

Styling - One of my favourite ways to decorate a room is to add some greenery. I love indoor plants, they are cost-effective and can make a room look larger and feel fresh. You can work them into so many styles just by choosing the right basket, pots or vases to suit your interior.

I also love the use of large scale frames or artwork. They can make such a statement and set the stage for styling.

Now you’re a bit of a super mum! Not only do you manage the @ahomesdiary Instagram page, but you also sell floral arrangements and customised doormats.

Share With us how you got involved with these home products and Are there any other home products or services we should expect to see from you in the near future?

Thank you that is so kind to say.

I have always been a creative and love working on things for my home. I really wanted to create a platform where I could share our journey of building our dream home and also share my passion and creativity. A place to combine my love for interior styling and floristry.

I love flowers in homes. They create such warmth and can make such a statement to an entrance or room. I really wanted to focus on creating custom designs for homes using preserved and silk flowers that will last years with love and care.

I love working with my clients to create a colour palette and style that will work within their homes.

I'm looking forward to creating more this year, and I won’t say no to new products or ideas for A Homes Diary in the future!
